Tamaiti Whangai - "The
practice of supporting and nurturing children -
remembering we are all children - responsible to, and for, each other".
Literally translated Tamaiti Whangai means "Nurturing Children".
Tamaiti Whangai was conceived and developed by Kara Puketapu, CEO of
Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui. He wanted to address the serious issue
of poor education achievement rates of Maori children when compared to
other ethnic groups throughout New Zealand.
There are 21,000 Maori living in the Hutt Valley (Te Awakairangi) as
registered by the latest census.
Traditional efforts to encourage better rates are not producing results
quickly
enough (if at all) and Tamaiti Whangai is a Marae-based project linked to
Maori and Pacific Island families living in this region.
The Tamaiti Whangai Coordinators Team is a close-knit group of specialists
headed by well-known local sporting and broadcasting personality, Ken
Laban.
