Smoking
In 1996, 44% of the Maori population aged 15 years and over regularly smoked tobacco cigarettes - that’s nearly half of all Maori adults

At this time Maori were:
bullettwice as likely as non-Maori to smoke
bulletmore likely than non-Maori to have ever smoked regularly
bulletless likely than non-Maori to be ex-smokers.

 In addition:

bulletMaori women were more likely to smoke than Maori men
bulletyoung Māori aged 20-39 were the most likely to smoke.

The information in this fact sheet is derived from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings which provides some of the most comprehensive and accurate information on smoking for adults aged 15 years and over. Unspecified responses have been excluded from the statistics presented here.
